It is not lost on me that I listened to this audiobook while walking, rather than being alone with my thoughts. It verges on a sense of superiority, but the digital detox advice is practical if obvious. Knowing that we should be less online doesn't make it easier to actually do it. His implications that we should rely on in person interaction rather than maintain long distance relationships comes with the smug satisfaction of having a family and settled life, which I vehemently disagree with as someone solo who moves regularly, finds friendship difficult, and relies heavily on the people I keep close despite distance.

I liked Newport's argument and felt it is very compelling. This book was more philosophical reasoning/personal essay than it was informative facts, etc. it definitely still felt like bro nonfiction though (almost everyone he discusses in depth is a man, and while he does try to acknowledge women it's often an afterthought thrown in). I would love to see an updated version for 2025. I did love his essay with Thoreau's philosophies included, and I am excited to teach a unit with those materials included.

I think this book is one I will have to keep revisiting because it is so useful to me in that it touches on the struggles I face when it comes to my addictions with social media and the digital word of the Internet. As an adult, I lament at how tied I am to these things and how I feel powerless in my attempts to untether myself from them so I can have better focus on life’s more important things. Cal Newport’s book provides a framework in which I can begin to understand why I am this way and what I can do to reclaim my time and life again from the stranglehold of social media and the Internet.
Digital minimalism is a wonderful mindset at which to resolve this issue of over-reliance on technology. It doesn’t assert that we untie ourselves entirely from technology, but rather helps us use technology to our advantage while ignoring its potential negative consequences.
I am glad I read this book and I hope to continue revisiting it again and again in my life to remind myself of the importance of embracing my life and its joys without being constantly focused on social media and technology. Thanks, Newport.

This book was just as I expected - mostly a list of reasons why social media has ruined the world and how it has affected our communication. There were some good tips and tricks here on how to take a sabbatical from socials, and a listing of some great tools that are available to assist you in that aim. Cal does mention that he is of the millenial generation in the book - the gen that has only known the post-internet world - But I didn't find the content relevant to me. I will, however, be keeping an eye on my family members and be more prepared to take action as needed.
