I feel like Anna Hackett has fabulous ideas for stories, and interesting plots. I like her characters, and enjoy their adventures. I keep coming back to her because a new series book blurb sounds awesome.

They just never jump that line from like to love, for me.

It all boils down to pacing. So freaking much happens in like 200 pages that none of it has any weight or emotional impact. There's one point in this book where the FMC says "I can't possibly be in 3 ship crashes in a week" as it appears their transport is going down, for, yes, the third time this week. And I was like "I know, right?!"

I feel like if she either extended the book, or scrapped a couple scenes to let the rest breathe a bit, it would let her stories be everything they are on the verge of being. But YMMV.

Ok, I loved Mal. She's someone I'd hang out with, and therefore; I loved living through her viewpoint in Overlord. Mal's loyalty and selflessness were a refreshing mix in this all-out intergalactic brawler with complex (but not too) inter-world politics.

I loved this book ! It was a fantastic story, one of my first sci-fi romance, it was highly recommended, and I’m glad it was ! I couldn’t stop reading, and I just read it in one go.

Mallory is a pilot who was asked to test a new wormhole divide alongside a scientist aboard a spaceship. But the mission had few issues, as she crashed on an alien planet far far away from the Earth system and her colleague is missing. Witnessing the crash, Overlord Rhain Zhalto found her, convinced that she was sent as a spy by his father (who wants to take control of his planet), he decided to put her in jail and interrogate her. But he couldn’t plan her strong will to escape, all of this is happening at a bad time for him, as he would prefer to focus his efforts on protecting his people.

Mallory is truly a fierce, strong woman, who learned sword skills with her step-father, which came in handy after her crash, as she immediately has to face a hostile creature. She will not let this beautiful lord command her, she is determined to find her friend and will attempt everything to be sure that she’s alive and safe. Rhain is also particularly strong, his rule is fair, and he puts his people first and wants to be sure that his father will not harm them in his quest for conquest. He clearly has other problems than watching this strange woman, but he couldn’t count on the attraction he feels for her. As they are forced to work together, they discover that the planet is similarly affecting Mallory as any native, another issue to handle.

Really a great book, I cannot wait to read the other ones on Brodin and Thadd. The universe is so well built and I just want to read the Galactic Gladiator series that happen before this one.

DNF. Romance and action felt forced and predictable. Gave up half way through. The FMC instantly learns how to use her abilities, without any missteps. Relationship felt very rushed and their conversations were just more info dumps.

Ok, so I enjoyed this book, but I didn’t love it. Basically, it felt rushed. Let’s get into specifics-
SETTING: Cool world building, with special planetary powers specific to that particular world. Interesting creatures and villains, but again, everything felt so rushed. I’m happy to indulge in a shorter book, but I felt like this story could have been given more depth and development. No spoilers, but I kept asking myself, why? Why is this person special, why is everything happening so so quickly?
SENTIMENT: I liked the relationship between the MCs enough to feel moderately invested in their relationship. I also had enough interest in at least a couple of the side characters to give their books a read, but I’m not dying to jump back into this world. I get the motivation for the male MC and I get the idea of wanting to find your friend. But again, everything happen so FAST!
STEAM: 2 out of 5 for me. I like a little tension and this one again felt rushed without the preamble or payoff.
In all, gave it 4 when it’s probably a 3.5 really.
