This is very much a product of its time (written in the 1930s). Lots of the character traits etc seem completely ridiculous to us now. I found the main character awful - with a terrible preoccupation with class and propriety that to modern standards makes him come off as inhuman and unfeeling.
That said, I did like the story. It's a fairly novel apocalypse and told pretty well.
