This is the third book I've read by this author and I think he is getting better and better.

This is a domestic thriller featuring an average Joe type of single father just trying to get by as a car salesperson while raising his teen daughter. One morning lhe drops her off near the hotel where she is working for the summer and finds she doesn't come home at the end of the day and has seemingly disappeared off the face of the earth. After that it's a race against time to find his daughter before the bad people do and during the chase discovers a cesspool of corruption and dastardly goings-on in his town.

While there is a bit of violence and mayhem, these books are a nice change from the bloody serial killer books that are in abundance.

Personally I would have liked a little more build up at the beginning before Syd disappeared, although I suppose this left the reader on a par with the adults in the novel with regards to not knowing her motives for disappearing or what she might have been mixed up in. I found myself speeding through this, but it was easy to read so the pace wasn't a problem. I felt that the revelation about Patty at the end wasn't entirely central to the plot, although the ending probably wouldn't have had the same affect had her relation to Syd and Tim stayed as that of a friend.
Definitely deserving of 4* and I'm looking forward to reading other novels by Linwood Barclay!

The one thing I like about Linwood Barclay's books is that they're just so readable. I always get pulled in and could easily finish one of his books in a single sitting. This one was about used-car salesman Tim Blake. His 17-year old daughter Sydney is living with him for the summer and is working at a nearby hotel. But one night Sydney doesn't come home, and according to the workers at the hotel Sydney never worked there. Tim tirelessly investigates to find out just what Sydney was into, and where she's gone. When Tim won't give up, someone starts setting him up to look guilty to the local police.

I liked this book but it wasn't quite on par to some others I've read of Barclay. The resolution to the mystery was okay but a little disappointing to me. I would have liked the story extended to cover the completion of the investigation, including a final discussion with the police investigator.

Spending time with his seventeen year old daughter, Sydney over Summer was something Tim Blake always looked forward to. Sydney usually worked with Tim at the car dealership, but this Summer she got a job at the Just In Time Hotel.

On the night Sydney disappears without a trace, Tim immediately heads over her place of work as this should've been the last place someone should've seen her. But Tim is confused when he's told no one by that name works there. How could that be possible? Tim is convinced there must be an explanation and this is merely a mix up, but there is no record of his daughter ever having worked there and it seems none of the staff have heard of her.

Frantically Tim tries to work out what's going on, but he doesn't know where to begin. He contacts her friends and they admit that Sydney had been acting odd lately, only they didn't know why and they didn't know where she was or where she might be. With very little to go on, Tim must try and find his daughter, but he soon learns he doesn't know, Sydney as well as he might've thought. As Tim searches for his daughter, he is left with more questions than answers.

Fear The Worst was a very entertaining read with twists and turns that will keep you guessing. Recommended to anyone who enjoys reading thriller novels.

It started out well -- I was hooked! About 3/4 of the way through the book it started dragging and became a bit ridiculous. There were a lot of threads left hanging too.

Linwood Barclay is fast becoming a favorite author. It seems like all his books so far have been very good. This one, like others he wrote, starts off fairly slow and keeps building up until it was hard to stop reading. The only minus to me is that, also like some others of his, the characters seem to make some bad decisions that seem obvious to me, but it gets them in trouble. However, they are usually under stress, and that makes it hard to think straight. Also, I'm an expert because I read a lot of books. ;-)

This one definitely had some surprises, but almost everyone lives happily ever after - except for several that didn't, that is.
