It is a short novella which reads like a short story. It is about the people at the margins, where dreaming is a sin and can cost a life if you are not very careful.

I am currently on a Steinbeck binge. After finishing Of Mice and Men & Cannery Row, I was worried this would pale in comparison. However, despite its brevity, The Pearl still upholds Steinbeck's beautiful prose, vibrant storytelling & bittersweet bite.

A short but impactful book, a morality tale. It's a dark book and not enjoyable in a sense, but very compelling. The characters are written well, despite how short the book actually is. I think the plight of the poor, the indigenous, the conquered is written well, and the futility of trying to break out of the system of oppression. The writing is simple in a way, but also has a lot of depth in that simplicity.
