This book was phenomenal. I’ve been a Maria Bamford fan for over a decade, and her humor has always hit me in all the goofiest and darkest spots. Her experiences with OCD, ED, SI, depression, anxiety, and addiction is relatable to me in a way I’ve never seen. I’ve also spent a lot of time in 12 step halls and she had me cackling outloud in my office commenting on how ridiculous those meetings can be.  She’s bold and hilarious and brave and flawed. I felt extremely seen by this book.

This was a difficult one to read.  I think if there is an audiobook version it might work better that way since it is written very much in the style that the author does comedy, so it can be very jarring with regular changes in font and abrupt asides.

Overall, it was interesting to read someone’s experience with mental health treatment, but it was made very obvious that it was from a privileged perspective.  Some of the advice given was offensive at best and dangerous at worst (joining a cult, while on brand for the book is not a good idea for the majority).

Audiobook. Maria Bamford is one of my favorite comedians and she's an excellent reader. Because this is a memoir read by the author does not necessarily mean an engaging narration, but Bamford is utilizing her skills to make an interactive experience.

The title is somewhat misleading, but only in that it reframes some terminology and broadens one's interpretations.

She is relatable even as her stories are unique; she is speaks from emotions that make shared experiences. She comes from a place that nearly everyone (if not everyone) has been or still are.

I'm glad Maria Bamfor wrote this and that I found it randomly. She's sweet, funny, astute, and kind.
