I’ve loved all her specials, have seen her live, and still, this book was wildly funny, shed insights on her life, and was radically transparent about mental health, recovery and the finances of being a comic

This book was phenomenal. I’ve been a Maria Bamford fan for over a decade, and her humor has always hit me in all the goofiest and darkest spots. Her experiences with OCD, ED, SI, depression, anxiety, and addiction is relatable to me in a way I’ve never seen. I’ve also spent a lot of time in 12 step halls and she had me cackling outloud in my office commenting on how ridiculous those meetings can be.  She’s bold and hilarious and brave and flawed. I felt extremely seen by this book.

Check the TWs and listen to the audiobook. It's perfection.

easy reader and lots of fun. good for me since i've fallen out of the habit and reading denser stuff has been challenging lately. Bamford is aware of this and mocks the reader often for it (calling us "skimmers" 😭).

Lots of reused material from her stand up shows but if you enjoy her act, you'll find the book fun. I like her a lot so I'm glad to support her financially with book sales but I also kinda wish I woulda just got this from the library lol. I doubt I'll ever read it again but I'll probably share it with some friends since it's good for some laughs and goes down easy. My favorite bits were her reflections on working for Target but I felt like that bit never went anywhere or culminated in a solid understanding/reflection of her time doing that work.

My one real complaint is that she has trigger warnings for all mentions of violence thoughts and suicide but then includes explicit weight numbers and descriptions of her (current) struggles with body dysmorphia and (past) struggles with restrictive eating with no warning. Makes sense for someone that would find Overeaters Anonymous (basically a weight watches type group but with STEPS!) helpful in terms of inching towards ED recovery but I do wish her editors would have said something since it's certainly trigger material.
