Excellent memoir. I listened to this book and finished it within 24 hours. I love the podcast so it was amazing to hear their voices tell their stories.

I started it for a challenge on Goodreads but didn't finish it before the end of April and honestly I'm not interested enough to finish it.

This is not what I was expecting... I never the listened to the authors' podcast and I have never heard of them previously. I was told this book was about how teaching and reinforcing to young girls and women the idea that they should always be likable instead of prudent is dangerous, and I honestly liked this premise. I DID NOT read the synopsis, so I was really surprise to realize that this is more of a self-help/memoir where they talk about addiction, family struggles, past relationships, eating disorders, therapy, etc. It took me a while to realize it was not what I was thinking because the beginning actually matched what I had in mind and they go back to a similar style towards the end. Still, it was interesting and funny (at times) and straight-forward. I would usually not even read the memoir of people I know nothing about, but I am not mad I read this one. I would actually listen to the podcast!
“We barely get any time on this planet. Do not spend it pleasing other people. Fuck politeness. Live life exactly how you want to live it so you can love the life you make for yourself.”
“But for women, it’s so much more than that. The politeness that we’re raised to prioritize, first and foremost, against our better judgment and whether we feel like being polite or not, is the perfect systematically ingrained personality trait for manipulative, controlling people to exploit.”
“you can’t “stay out of the forest” because the world is a forest. And it’s filled with predators. If someone is assaulted, it wasn’t because they were careless, irresponsible, or dressed wrong. It happened because some piece of shit chose to assault them. And if someone is murdered, it’s because some piece of shit chose to murder them. We need to turn the conversation toward identifying the behavior that leads to these attacks, figuring out how to identify these criminals faster and making sure their jail terms accurately reflect the seriousness of their crimes.”

Listened to the audiobook like a cheater. This was an amazing look into what makes these two fantastic women tick, and how we can all grow into the best versions of ourselves.
I'm so grateful for women like Karen and Georgia who are able to 'fuck politeness' and talk about stuff that matters. Both this book and MFM in general are entertaining, but I love that they are willing to talk about the tough stuff: mental health, addiction, disordered eating, victim blaming. They have a platform and they use it, as Georgia says in the conclusion, "for good and not evil." They're not afraid to admit their mistakes and learn from people with different experiences than their own. They're relatable and hilarious and impressively open with their personal stories. And they include some fun nods to the podcast (look & listen, attic, Elvis do you want a cookie?, etc.) within the memoir format.
Highly recommend. SSDGM.

This took me a hot minute to finish, so I honestly don’t remember a lot of the middle of the book. I remember sitting on a bench in the park enjoying the fact that I was reading on a bench in the park, but I don’t remember what exactly I was reading at that time. The chapters I do remember were interesting for the most part! Some of it I had to push through to get to the rest. Way less murder than I thought there would be.
