Stuart stond op uit de berm, klom in zijn auto en reed de weg op die naar het noorden voerde. Rechts van hem kwam de zon juist over de heuvels heen. Toen hij in het wijdse landschap dat zich voor hem uitstrekte voor zich uit tuurde, leek de weg heel lang. Maar de lucht was helder en op de een of andere manier voelde hij dat hij de goede kant op ging.
