a harrowing, but invaluable read. abulhawa blurs fiction and reality through gorgeous, intimate prose. as reader you’re faced with violence and its ramifications through distance and years caused by apartheid.

nahr is flawed, yet fierce and her character ultimately highlights the nuances of life (relationships, attitudes, motives) in a world that has stripped many from their homeland. as we watch the escalation of occupational forces in the past year, it’s a good reminder that there’s no such thing as a “perfect” victim/martyr—in the eyes of brutality and, most of all, genocide, all are equally worthy of our attention and resistance. despite all the pain and suffering inflicted on palestinians, it is additionally important acknowledge and celebrate their enduring love, joy, and hope, which is exactly what the last few chapters leave us with.
