I’m a sucker for a dystopian, fuck corrupt government, the bad guys might be the good guys story and this one is no exception. Toss in some spice, some romance, some high fantasy and fucking dragons? I’m hooked. Holy moly.

The first third was so aggravating I nearly gave up. I can understand both why people hate and love it. I fall somewhere in the middle. The author seemed to struggle with consistency and clarity. The only reason I could follow anything was because of the revised map and an illustration explaining squad structure that was in the second book. I could tell this first book was rushed to publication. While I was able to see most of the plot twists coming they were still enjoyable. Battle sequences were fun. Romance is a delight. The dude characters we spend the most time with are loveable. It's exactly middle of the road for me. Lot of issues but lots of good components as well. I'll be reading the sequel if only to satisfy by curiosity.

Holy shit!!! What took me so long to read this book!!! It is incredible!!! Rebecca Yarros is in the same league with Sarah J Maas except with Rebecca it doesn’t take a book or 2 to get me addicted to the series, I was hooked from the beginning! I loved everything about this book & I already want to read it again!!! But instead I’m going to go start Iron Flame! 😍

Het verhaal is en blijft fantastisch en een enorme aanrader. Nadat ik dit verhaal vorig jaar luisterde in het Engels,  was het fijn om via de Nederlandstalige versie een paar verhaallijnen grondiger op te nemen, wat details mee te pikken en een beter beeld te krijgen van het Continent via het kaartje op de binnenkaft.

Alleen is het zo'n zonde dat de vertaling zo slecht is. Typ- en spellingsfouten, een dt-fout, ook vreemde zinsconstructies tot zelfs een foute inhoudelijke vertaling. 

Conclusie: lees dit boek, je zal het je niet beklagen! Maar lees het in het Engels als je die taal genoeg machtig bent.
