The Yorick crew goes international in this volume and it’s one of the most action packed yet, unfortunately, the story goes all over the place. It feels chaotic and we barely have time to get accustomed to one situation when everything changes and were onto the next. So much gets crammed into so few pages that it feels more like snippets than complete, planned out storytelling.
It remains a compelling read, but I’m worried that the quality storytelling might be about to go downhill.

I realize as these are published, the volumes are not so closely spaced together. I just seem to learn about series like this about 20 - 30 years after the fact because they become tv series. Reading this 6th volume, it seems like there's always a new group they come in contact with and are 'captured' and have to figure out how to get away from plus some odd distracting dream filler. One would think this far into the 'new world' which has been a couple of years, Yorick and company would have figured this out. There is a still a mission as they are working towards finding Ampersand, Yorick's monkey, who may hold the key as to why all of the males died except for Yorick and Ampersand. My rating is 4 stars because this is still an entertaining read.

I've thought a lot about this series and I wonder if Captain Kilina's comments are meant to respond to any criticism received by the author, or if it's just to acknowledge that he's received that criticism?

"My whole life, I've always been a...a supporting character in somebody else's story. Daughter, student, fuck buddy, first mate, whatever. But when the plague went down, I finally saw a chance to change that. ... You don't get it, do you? The Australians are RIGHT. Now that you're here, I'm just another crazy bitch fucking up the world YOU'RE gonna save. It figures. An entire planet of women, and the one GUY gets to be the lead."

Loved the Sirens of Titan reference.

Adventures at sea

Next in the series sees Yorick - the last remaining man on the planet, on a boat travelling to Japan to rescue his monkey Ampersand - the last remaining male animal, who seems to be key to the plague. Onboard he meets the Captain, who he kisses, and finds out that there cargo is heroine, bound for Japan, which the Australian Navy is trying to intercept. Cue lots of shooting and arguing, and a moral dilemma for Yorick... On top of this, Agent 355 and the Doctor get it on, and totally confuse Yorick even more...

I am enjoying this series, I still have no idea what's going on and why all the men died, but I'm enjoying finding out. The artwork is good, and the dialogue, although a little cliched at times is funny. I really love sitting down for an hour or so and getting lost in these, especially at the moment while I am on holiday - very relaxing. The only thing that is slightly annoying is the fact that all the women they come across seem to be absolutely gorgeous, but then this is a comic book, and a visual medium, so why the hell not?

Okay fine it's ridiculous but COME ON, Y'ALL, hot 355-on-Dr.-Allison-Mann action! I'm willing even to put up with pirates. (Problem: am now stranded at parents' house without Vols. 7-10. Solution: l have Persepolis!)

As other's have pointed out in their reviews, the highlight of this collection is the last issue, "Boy Loses Girl". It's nice to have an issue dedicated Beth, and the art is fun, with the switch to old school style dot colouring for part of it.

The rest of the trade is filler, but entertaining filler, with swashbuckling pirates on the high seas.

The will they/won't they gets a little tired... but it is all worth it for: "somehow in a world entirely of women - the one man gets the lead."

So, Dr. Mann and 355 finally getting it on was very hot, if unfortunately not surprising, considering this volume's title. Still, certain things are starting to annoy me. First, the repetition of the "Yorick meets girl, Yorick and girl spark, girl dies" formula is getting really old; Vaughan "hangs on lantern on it" by having Yorick make much the same complaint, but that does not excuse you, mister! Also, I'm peeved that the Dr. Mann/355 relationship appears to be resolving itself by having them fuck the UST out of the way, leaving Dr. Mann free to find a cute, one-eyed Australian lesbian and 355 to go back to being "as straight as Richard Nixon." Now, Vaughan very well might not leave things this way, but it's how the volume ends, so until the library coughs up No. 7, I'm gonna have to stick with be peeved.
