A thoughtful and imaginative book. The illustrations still stand the test of time.

Read for ATS2519 - Children's and young adult literature

Of the many picture books I read, or really heard of, as a kid this was surprisingly not one of them. A fun fact about this is that in The Starless Sea (which is my favourite book and I have multiple tattoos for it) this is referenced. How fun!

The book was very confusing, climax didn't feel that major to the readers, not much build up, let me down a little bit.

This is a wonderful classic! I always enjoy reading this book and am particular fond of the illustrations. They are iconic and brilliant and beautiful! Also, I am in love with the way they take over the white space of the pages. As the story goes on and Max descends more and more into the imaginary world of where the wild things are, the illustrations creep onto the white space of the page, until in the very middle of the story they completely take over the white boarder and even the words. I think this is just an amazing was to visually represent the idea that Max's imagination is running wild.

That being said, I recently read this as a story time book, while it still gets 5 stars for being awesome in general, I think i would give it about 3 stars if i were only thinking of it in terms of my toddler story time. I don't think it works quite as well for that age range as it does for perhaps older children or a one an one reading. They book just did not seem to capture the attention of my young audience. I had them roll their terrible eyes, nash their terrible teeth, show their terrible claws and roar their terrible roars along with the story, and they liked that well enough. But they seemed to be disinterested in the rest of the story and didn't really connect to Max. This book actually has a fairly deep themes, of imagination, rebellion and missing home. I can imagine that if you are too young to pick up on those concepts, this book is just not as much fun. I have read this story to pre school classes in which things went much better, so perhaps this is just a book for a little bit older aged children.
