I haven’t read this since I was a kid. I didn’t remember anything standing out except the art style, which is still delightful in its hatches, uncanny faces, and mismatched animal parts. Max’s world provided a window into childish imagination. But ultimately, he recognizes correctly that one must come out to reality as well. Thankfully, his is a warm one with a caring family.
I don’t expect to add many children’s books here. I don’t often read them. But I am not opposed to doing so by any means. There is great literature for young people, even the very youngest; though, most is tripe.

One of my favourite picture books since I was a child. The cadence of the text, the texture of the illustrations and the message of the story is something children of all ages can appreciate.
this book possibly saved my life a few times as a child. i met maurice sendak when i was in college, and broke into tears when trying to express my gratitude for this story. he invited me to tea and we talked about life, art, and rebellion. his lecture about "in the night kitchen" blew me away.

I understand it's place of honor in children's literature, but it general it's just not my thing.
I wanted to read this again, given that the movie will be coming out this fall (and I can't wait!). In my mind, the book was larger than life. I remembered it being long and detailed and excitingly frightening. Patrick and I stopped in Syracuse and bought a copy for our niece and nephew. They might be a bit old for the book at this point, but it's still a must-have. I read it quickly before checking out and sending it along with Grammy back home to the kids. It's still a beautifully illustrated, well-written book, amazing it what it conveys in so few pages.
I hope the movie adaptation does it justice.

And Max the king of all wild things was lonely and wanted to be where someone loved him best of all.
