Just finished A Darkening of Dragons and it was different than I expected for sure. Much more violent than I expected for middle grade. Lots of gross out stuff too. It was an interesting take on the Pied Piper tale. It didn’t always go the way I expected which is good. Kept me on my toes. It has lots of humour, albeit sometimes a bit dark and made me laugh out loud at times. I liked the system of magic that was created with music and harmonies composing spells. I loved the dracogriff Barven so much and was glad he was made of sturdier stuff since he seems to crash quite a lot. I also enjoyed Wren, the girl who was cursed to be a rat but could communicate with the Merisax hand signals she was taught. In the end I decided that I enjoyed this and am looking forward to reading the next in the series. Curious to see what will happen next to our team of misfit heroes.

Somewhere between 9-12 and YA, this is a lot of fun, with interesting characters and plausible threats. It's a twist on the Pied Piper story, or, rather, its aftermath, set in a world in which Pipers are not unusual. Our hero and heroine build a believable friendship, and there's a real sense of danger, as well as very real charm.
