I absolutely loved this book. The characters were amazing and I was rooting for every one of them, the plot was clever and kept me guessing and the whole thing was a pleasure to read. Cannot wait to read more about Patch, Wren and Barver's adventures.

My favourite character is Wren, a girl cursed to be a rat because she is compassionate.

Jugendliche.

This is the story of Patch Brightwater, a trainee Piper who has been sent to prison for playing illegal magical songs that put people in danger, as he learns that the evil Piper of Hamelyn has escaped and he teams up with dracogriff Barver and Wren, a girl who has been cursed to live a rat to set off on a journey to stop him, as well as accomplishing other more personal quests along the way. As you will likely have guessed, this book is set in the world of the Pied Piper, but it`s set ten years after that story and it builds and entire world and magic system around it, and I loved how clever that was. The magic system of Piping and information about the other groups of people, such as Sorcerers and dragons, that inhabit the world were all so detailed and interesting, and I`m so excited to venture to different places within it as the series continues. I`m also very much looking forward to seeing more of the characters, as I loved all three of the main trio individually, and I also loved the friendship between them; the bantering dialogue had me laughing on many occasions, and it was so nice to see how caring they were to each other at other points. The supporting cast were also fantastic, and I look forward to learning much more about them, most especially the Hamelyn Piper as we only really saw him in one (incredibly tense) scene in this book, and he has all the makings of a truly wonderful villain. Finally, I loved how gripping this was and how much I wanted to constantly read on, and I wasn`t expecting some of the twists or reveals that happened at all, and there were some very intriguing unanswered questions left open at the end left me wishing the second book was already out. 5/5

I loved this one!

A boy, a girl cursed and turned into a rat, and a dracogriff find each other and become friends. Each of them have a personal mission to complete. While helping each other, they realize that everything leads to one common goal. Stopping the Piper of Hamelyn.

I loved this book so much. These characters quickly became some of my favorites. I have to read the next one to find out what happens.

This book is full of magic, friendship and adventure! It's a brilliant retelling of Hamelin the Pied Piper but with dragons thrown in! This book has it all: a sign language-talking rat, a sorceress that foretells prophecies and some good plot twists to keep you on your toes.

I really enjoyed this book even though it's targeted at children - it's got everything you could want in a story with some awesome characters. What's not to love? And the last few sentences are pure brilliance. Magic runs through this book and I loved it!

There are times when all you want to do is go back to the uncomplicated reading and stories of our childhood – and I couldn’t believe that I found exactly that and oh so much more in A Darkness of Dragons by S.A. Patrick.

Based on the Pied Piper of Hamelin; this book, the first in a series; begins with Patch Brightwater, an apprentice Piper who tries to help a village overrun with rats but he does so by using a song that has been banned.

This ends up with him the dungeons of Tiviscan with absolutely no hopes of escaping – when he makes a new friend with a human who has been cursed to live as a rat aka Wren – and is locked up next to the infamous Hamelin Piper – who led the children of humans and dragons alike & no one has ever been able to find them.

Oh did I forget to mention that this retelling of Pied Piper also has dragons living in an uneasy truce with the humans? Oh yes! Does this make this retelling a thousand times better than any other retelling? HECK YASS!!

When the dragons break the uneasy truce by attacking the dungeons to free the Piper to find out what he has done to dragon children – it means that Patch (and Wren) are able to escape their prison. While they are on the run, they encounter a half dragon, half griffin; A DRACOGRIFF– and that means its adventure time!

I adored everything about this retelling – first let’s say kudos to the author for picking up a fairytale that is not in the mainstream for retelling & second, the writing style of the author just sucks you in – case in point, I am 27 years old; and I read this middle grade book in like 2 days of starting it :D

And the twists and turns just kept coming; and I am so freaking excited to see where the author takes Patch and his friends to!
