As always, I like the characters in Penny's books; however, I'm getting tired of the really over-dramatic situations in which pretty much the fate of the universe (hyperbole) lies in the balance and everyone writes of Gamache as too senile and blowing it right before he saves the day. Seriously: by now, everyone who lived in the area would know perfectly well that he is not old and senile, that he's ALWAYS got something massive up his sleeve, and there would be no drama. But maybe I give too much credit to human nature.
This was a tense book from beginning to end. I was really taken in by the story of the cobrador and the conscience of a higher court.

fantastic! Definitely enjoying this series! This one is framed with a court case, and of course, Three Pines is right in the middle of it all.
I do so enjoy my trips to Three Pines. The characters feel like old friends by now. There are lots of twists and turns and danger to the tiny village that is a key, strategic location on the US/Canadian border.

I am getting a bit tired of how saintlike Armand is and how interesting and quirky the rest of them are, but still great.

As the great poet Gucci Mane would say: "Well Damn!"
This book hurt. But, it was a delicious pain. While I am getting a scary Stephen King vibe from Three Pines, I love love LOVE its residents. Clara and her art and one could only be so lucky to have Ruth as a grandmother.
I truly enjoyed this plot and the back-and-forth court scenes. It was seamless, unlike other books where you get a "3 weeks ago" or "present time." I hate that crap. This is what I imagined Law and Order to look like in a book. When the sh!t really hit the fan I had to take a moment or two to ready myself because I did not know what to expect.
I was kept on my toes and the climax was well worth the wait. It took me a little bit longer to finish this one but it still felt fast-paced. Coming down from a book high caused by Penny is something I am used to and welcome!
