The one with the cobrador. I liked the different structure here; the story flashed backward and forward between the trial and the crime. The ending was surprisingly action-packed, and yes, I cried. Of course.

I’m a big Louise Penny fan. If you are too, you’ll love this book. Helps to have read the previous books in the Inspector Gamache series.

Another brilliantly written Gamache mystery. Chapter 31 is a master class on how to manage multiple perspectives and timelines. In reading the acknowledgements, I saw that Penny had written this in the time surrounding her husband's death, finding a retreat to Three Pines to be healing. I lost my mom three weeks ago, and I chose to read this book now because I also wanted the comfort of Three Pines and the steadiness of Gamache. I didn't know about the timing of writing, but that comfort came through.
slow-paced
With each book in this series the depth of characterization and the complexity of plots moves assuredly towards being the greatest, most literate crime fiction of our tmes. Respect for Louise Penny is huge, especially as she lost the love of her life, her husband while writing this. I do not recommend, I INSIST if you want superb, literate, great fiction to read- then read this series.

Another terrific Gamache novel. I enjoyed the split time line which wove in and out of the testimony Gamache gives in the summer about events the previous November. Without giving too much away, I have to say I don't always love the way Penny describes people on drugs, as though all drugs have the same effect and all addicts turn into monsters. Or the idea that a war on drugs can ever truly be "won." Other than these minor points this is another great story that uses repeated imagery and language to pull together the threads that are more like fuses, drawn into one explosive climax. If you already like this series this installment will not disappoint.
