This was such a slow burn that initially I thought I wasn’t going to like it. The first few chapters introduce an overwhelming number of characters that feel impossible to keep track of but as the story builds, each of their stories, and their connections to one another unfold in an organic and beautiful way. The research Picoult does for her novels always gives them a level of authenticity that other novels don’t have. The information about the eugenics project that happened in Vermont in the 1930s was new to me and very interesting. I loved the way Picoult wove her story around such an intense topic — the characters are real and the story is believable even when it’s fantastical.
