A twisted, disconcerting novella in the fantasy/fable genre with a serious nod to the Brothers Grimm. The images that accompany this edition interweave with the story and reflect an old, forgotten library book which adds a great deal of charm. Younger readers will find this imaginative and scary and older readers will see deeper ideas about fear, loneliness and ultimately overcoming the things life throws at you that you just can't dodge.
Weird. Interesting. Loved the inclusion of images and patterns, but was unhappy with the story.
Sorry Murakami. I just wasn't impressed by this one.

I just stumbled across this book (ironically as a library employee, which amused me) and HAD to read it. The direct prose and dark fantastical elements completely enraptured me, second to the actual design of the novella - it has flaps to start and striking art throughout, and the prose actually starts on the cover. What an experience. I definitely recommend this if you're looking for a short book to enjoy in one sitting. Bonus points if you go find it on the shelf of your local library!
