Netgalley Audiobook:
First off, thank you to Netgalley for an advanced listening copy of this title. Like many readers that will be drawn to The Maidens, I also very much enjoyed this author's previous title The Silent Wife. While this book is quite different from The Silent Wife, once again the author measures up to what readers have come to expect from Michaelides. This title is considered a thriller, but I would say it is more of a literary thriller....and that is a good thing. There is a constant background of Greek History and the Greek Tragedies that we have all studied. They are almost a character unto themselves. While this title will deliver the twisty turns that readers expect from Michaelides, I think he has stepped up his game in this title. I listened to the audiobook version and was immediately captivated. I think this is one of those titles that plays better on audio than print. This will be a title that readers flock to.....and for good reason. (Look for the wink toward the end that ties this book to The Silent Wife---very clever).

1.5/5
This is, without a doubt, the worst book I’ve read this year. Simultaneously boring and deeply frustrating, I truly can’t articulate my disappointment clearly enough. The culprit wasn’t too difficult to guess, but the motive comes out of nowhere and makes absolutely no sense. Not to mention I just didn’t like the writing at all, and all characterization fuels to serve as a vehicle for red herrings- not actually creating 3 dimensional characters.
I was so excited when this was announced, too. Seemed so up my alley, and I’d heard mostly positive things about The Silent Patient; fairly quickly, though, I realized that this was just not for me. I only managed to stick it out to the end because my sister and I share a BOTM subscription and I wanted to be able to actually discuss the book with her when she reads it.
(Also I do believe there’s a way to tie together your books into an existing universe and have it feel natural and compelling but the way Michaelides forces a reference to the The Silent Patient into this book is cheesier than an MCU end credits scene)

Pretty riveting. First book in a while that I felt like I just couldn’t get through quickly enough. Sadly, I didn’t love the ending - I liked my theories better, but still recommend for sure.
i liked that Michaelides merged and included characters from The Silent Patient in this story too!! I have to say, i was a little hesitant at first because i was seeing lots of similarities between the two books, so i thought the same kind of twist was coming at the end and i started to catch myself becoming a little bit disappointed… but wow! it went a completely different direction than i was expecting, and this book made me audibly gasp and cover my mouth at the end when everything became clear. that being said, it also left me wanting a little bit more at the end just like The Silent Patient, but maybe that’s just his style and was meant on purpose ◡̈

Liked that the ending caught me off guard, but I had a feeling it would which is the only reason I pushed myself to finish. For the most part, I was not captivated by the plot, the premise, or the characters. In other words, the ending was decent, and I enjoyed the nod to the author's previous novel, but I wish the whole journey had been more intriguing.
