A devastating book. At times humorous, other times tense and all times engaging. There is a lyrical nature to Saramago's prose that I really enjoy. Although he comes from a completely different angle as George Orwell, he is on par with Orwell for his commentary on society and tyranny. As a follow up to "Blindness" I could not have been more surprised at how good this was. But it is also a different book from Blindness. Blindness was a long descent through increasing horror, relentless and traumatizing. "Seeing" is a slow burn of increasing tension, as if it were a fist slowly going back for a punch and the victim could only await the hit, unsure if it will ever come. Phenomenal.

I loved Blindness, however, this is just so unlikely that I can’t get into it. To imagine government abandoning society because of the freedom to cast blank ballots seems ridiculous.
I also think the continued style from Blindness to Seeing makes little sense from a literary perspective.
