Not sure now to review this book. you know from the beginning what has happened and this is more about the lead up and the thoughts of the characters that are effected by the outcome of what has happened. i thought it took a good look at how people perceive others some from very high points of view without realising what they project on to others. that being said i thought this was a intense, suffocating short novel that didn't give you time to breath before the next part was shown to you. i'm glad i read it in a few short sittings as i think gives you that intense feeling as you read. i think i will read something else by this author but not for a while this was quite the story and i now need to step away from it and think about what i just read.

I started and finished this book because my best friend wanted me to read it, she herself had been busy researching and learning more about french writers. I was instantly hooked by the premise and honestly enjoyed all the topics that it presented and that one could discuss with friends: motherhood, gender roles, racism and it’s place in France, beauty standards and so on.
However what I admired most were its descriptions and studies of characters as well as the always present and underlying feeling of tension that built up over the course of the book. The only reason i have it 4 instead of 5 stars is because during certain times it seemed a little repetitive and although I understand why it ended the way it did, I was anticipating that built up tension to be unraveled somehow and got kind of disappointed. Still, i’d recommend this book to anyone who’s interested in reading something different/new!

Un recit prenant qui nous rend empathique de la folie meurtrière.

Leïla Slimani’s Lullaby won France’s most prestigious literary prize, the Prix Goncourt, in 2016. It is the kind of novel that will give anyone who has a nanny pause for thought, for it centres around a rather abhorrent crime carried out by a seemingly perfect au pair, catching everyone by surprise.

I’m going to be completely up front and say I didn’t much like this book, which is known as The Perfect Nanny in some territories.

As much as I love dark fiction — goodness knows I read a lot of it — this one didn’t sit right with me. It felt distasteful, shocking for the sake of being shocking, and I didn’t find it terribly convincing.
