I had never heard of this book till I saw the Netflix show and I was intrigued. Then when I read that the author included Sherlock Holmes as a character, and then responded to the resulting cease and desist letter by bringing him back in his next book as Herlock Sholmes, that I had to read this.
The stories are very clever, and Lupin provides enough Belle Epoque snark to make every tale amusing. Always funny to see stuffed shirts and bureaucrats get their comeuppance. Even when you can figure out the case early on it’s still great fun watching how he pulls it off.
At first I thought the book was poorly translated, then after a while I realized it was rendered in excellent English, just full of the jargon and jokes of the swells of England over a century ago. Once I got used to the Edwardian lingo it actually picked up more charm for me.
