I’m conflicted about this book. On the one hand, I listened to the audiobook and didn’t realize it was an abridged version (only 2hrs long whereas the book is somewhere around 400-something pages). So, I don’t know if maybe it was abridged badly or what is missing but this just wasn’t doing it for me.

On the second hand, I cannot ABIDE the audiobook’s narrator/the author. I found her voice so frustrating as the cadence seemed to affected as to be grating. So that probably didn’t help. I may or may not have to revisit this in its physical form.

There was promise here, promise for something profound, reflective and insightful - but it was left unfulfilled. Perhaps a product of 90’s feminism, this narrative leaves the reader wishing for something more & something different. The “lessons” from each folk legend/ myth feel contrived. Wouldn’t recommend.

Felt a bit outdated and slow. I do think there was some insightful things, but nothing profound. I wish this was a collection of stories and not so much lessons on how to be woman.

This was actually the dumbest thing I have ever read. Ever.

Finishing it was the truest test of my “finish books you start” policy after the 14th time she used the word “moist”. Awful. Just awful.

I wish this had just been an anthology of folk stories about womanhood. I found the commentary extremely hard to get through, expressing quite a narrow view of what womanhood is and means and bending every myth to match the author's beliefs seemingly regardless of the original context of the story. And the book is mostly commentary - for the first chapters, there are 10 pages of it for every 1 page of story.
While I'm sure some readers will find something they like or find useful here, this book is not for me.

The book was insightful, but I believe it would have been more remarkable for people in the 90s. Personally, it reiterated lessons that I had heard before. The main aim is to reclaim womanhood, become self-aware, be creative, and authentic, and nurture one’s instinct.
