this was a great story. there were a few things that got on my nerves
1. info dumps
2. for the first 100 pages i thought i was going crazy. i felt like the reader was left out of the loop instead of being taken along with the story
3. i think nick and bree is a bit insta-lovey… i like them both but name one thing they have in common other than bonding over their shared trauma of having dead mothers.
it was fantastic though. especially for a ya fantasy. great writing and pacing. selwyn is MOTHER

There are only two things about this book that I didn't like: first person POV, and a love triangle. Both of these are personal taste, and both of them I got over by the end of the book.
I am white and in my twenties. I'm past the age of YA, - I read this for a YA Lit class. I fell absolutely in love with it. My mother died when I was sixteen, and across the many stories I have read that have had dead parents, I have never - *never* - seen something as accurate and impactful as Legendborn. This story is incredibly important in how it confronts slavery and its consequences, the systematic and generational effects of racism, and the connections to the Arthurian myth are done lovingly and out of passion, not undercooked subversion or just for buzzwords. It's a beautiful story, incredibly unique and well-made, and I adore Bree. But at the end of the day, the thing that stuck with me the most was her grief over her mother. I read this nearly a year ago, and just thinking of it now is making me tear up again. I have yet to read the second book, but I look forward to getting the chance.
