I was recommended this book by a co-worker because I was looking for an introduction into speculative fiction for my 12-year-old niece. I had Dune, I gave her The Hobbit. Now I'm mad I didn't know about this series!
Bree could've easily been me, so there's a bias. Black girl from North Carolina (go Heels!) thrust into an environment where she has to work through trauma to figure out who she is while dealing with hella racism and classicism. She's angry, feels alone, pushes people away, feels like she has to go it alone, can't trust, wants to lose someone not like her. Wants to fight, but ain't exactly good at it. Doesn't always know the right move.
She's also a fifteen-year-old girl who just lost her mother, has been lied to about who she is and what she can do. Hasn't figured out where she belongs. And oh, yeah, she's pulled into a world of Arthurian legend, magic, Welsh, ancestral history, slavery, and secrets. That's a tall order for anyone.
This is about trauma and loss. Being tied to it and trying to figure out how to be with it, survive it, and be strengthened by it as you accept it. While going through puberty and moving through this world--any world--as a young Black woman.
I've never been a big fan of relationship triangles, and that twist cliffhanger ending had me going, "Girl, what?" And I personally believe that the Order feels more like a Duke thing than a Carolina thing, but I'm being silly. The triangle's organic to the characters, they're not acting older than they are, and, well, Bree is gonna need a book or two to work through what she discovered about herself. I will be on the journey with her.
My niece is getting this series for her next birthday.
