Re-read from maybe 13-15 years ago: Crusie is a benchmark for great romance for me. Feminist, snappy dialogue, great chemistry, appealingly flawed characters, quirky charm, and one of my all time favorite sex scenes.

Total comfort read, very fantastical but funny and sweet. Side characters kinda stole the show a bit; the daughter was adorable.
Charming book, this was like a hug. I genuinely laughed on several occasions. and the writing was lovely. Some epic descriptions.
And the siblings love was five stars.

I have just discovered my new summer guilty pleasure reading. Smart women, intrigue, and more. To think I came across this doing collection development for work. *grin*

I have owned this book since I was in secondary school and I always remember this one as the one I liked least of the Crusie books I owned. Now I am beginning to re-evaluate that role. Sure, the story is slower and I really disliked the dishonesty aspect which happened. But I loved the Dempsey's I loved Sophie and her determination to stay on the straight and narrow and I loved Amy and her quirky ways (even if someone should have slapped her and told her she was being a brat) and I liked Davy and how he is crooked, but not too crooked to dislike.

And the romance in this is brilliant. I loved that it was some casual thing between people who were fascinated with one another but really didn't want to be serious. Especially as they each grated on one another. Phin and Sophie were this fun couple who were just having really great sex (each for their own reasons) and then their lives ended up getting intertwined without them meaning to.

And the town of Temptation was just hilarious. I think this may have been the beginning of my love for small towns without it ever meaning to with the way everyone knew everyone's business and the biggest drama was the colour of the water tower.

I don't know, I wrote this book off when I was younger but now I can really appreciate what a great read it is. Next up will be Faking It, I think.

I read the sequal first and wasn't impressed. I reallly liked Welcome to temptation. Glad I gave Crusie another go.
Spoiler at end

Sophie and her sister go to Temptation to make a movie for Clea. Its a small town with "family values". Clea made a porn once upon a time and think thats what the girls are up to. Technically yes, but its vanilla porn as the girls put it.

Phin is a 4th generation mayor single father. He considers sophie to be the devils candy. They are attracted and go at. Sophie has some issues with town boys. She never fit in growing up. Lost her V to a town boy and was humilated and at first resents Phin for being another town boy.

Sophie's brother, the con man comes to town so does a porn producer and Cleas current husband Zane. Zane is found dead. However Amy moved the body and now Davy and Sophie get sucked into the cover up b/c Family comes first and their family history is not tarnished its opaque.

The dirty version (the cut the porn producer made) of the movie gets broadcast on Temptation cable.
So now they need to figure out who killed Zane, and who hijacked the movie.

What happened:

Virginia shot Zane but he died of a heart attack

Stephen stole the porn and played it on the cable. he gerts appointed intram police chief for six weeks while wes heads of to l.a. with Amy. (plan is he will be so awful nobody will vote for him as mayor

Davy thinks Clea killed Zane, but she just let him die. Davy steals all of Cleas money and offers her 750,000 if she signs over the deed of her house to Sophie

Leo (the porn producer) elopes with Rachel (the town sweet heart) who is in love with him

Phin agrees to run for mayor one more time and proposes to sophie. Sophie says yes and realizes her con man history has prepared her for a life of politics. she thinks about running for mayor the next election. So the mayor will still be a Tucker

This is the second Crusie book I read (oh so long ago), and so it will remain a constantly re-read favourite.

Sophie is a great character, she's at this stage of her life where she's been holding her family together for so long she doesn't even recognize how much they take advantage of her. Phin's pretty cool too, I think he's the only Crusie dad so far and it really softens him a lot that he's so good about Dilly.

I did find the mystery part kind of weird the first time I read it. The villain is so non-nonsensical and their eventual capture and such at the time seemed anti-climactic. Now as an adult I get how things work a little better, or at least I understand that not all cages have bars.

Not the best. Rather corny with too much going on and too unbelievable.
