A beautiful picture book with wonderful illustrations. This is the kind of picture book that I would have spent hours pouring over as a kid looking at the pictures again and again. My 4 yo and 8 yo both enjoyed it.

I read this to my kids and kept crying because the story just really tugged in my heart strings.

I’ve been fascinated by lighthouses and lighthouse keepers for a long time. This book was beautifully illustrated. Sophie Blackall has a folksy, whimsical style I really enjoy. The detail was wonderful as well. I could tell even though there’s not many words, that this book had been well researched and I enjoyed the authors afterword.

Hello Lighthouse has two storylines throughout the book. One is of the lightkeeper (which is lengthy) and other is the lighthouse in the weather (which is short). I selected the shorter story to read during storytime and skipped over the lengthy paragraphs.

Gorgeous, gorgeous book. This book was not exactly what I expected; it was so much more. This is not just a picture book about lighthouses, it also shows beautifully how history has changed the workings of a lighthouse without being sad or sentimental, and it tells a story about a keeper and his family, the danger, isolation, and joy of the life. I really loved this book. Very well deserving of the Caldecott Medal this year.

This seemed different than other caldecott books. It was more focused on adults than children.
