I added this book to my tbr after I saw a post from @michellegriep singing its praises. Michelle always has great recs and I love reading her colorful reviews.

Oathbound is a swashbuckling high seas adventure filled with pirates, mermaids, treasure and ghosts. Emme and Arn will quickly steal your heart, along with the rest of the crew.

Arn is a perfect mix of Jack Sparrow’s cunning and passion for the sea and Will Turner’s tender heart and selfless devotion. Emme is the daughter of a renowned pirate, she detests the water and the life style, but reluctantly agrees to help Arn on his newest quest. She is smart, capable, and the object of Arn’s secret affection. There are many dangers to face, oaths to be honored, treasure to discover, and lives hanging in the balance. And oh my, the double whammy of shockers with that ending! I cannot wait to read book 2.

This is a clean YA fantasy with a little romance, some magic elements and fighting scenes. There are some instances of death, dismemberment, rum, and drunkenness, typical pirate stuff. Nothing graphic or overdramatized.

Disclaimer: I received this as an arc from Books of Matches Media and these are my own opinions.

I absolutely loved this book! It was so was to get into, I pretty much finished it over Christmas and I have so many great notes.
1) I love loved the “thick thighs and a belly that rolls when I sit”. I loved it , we are seeing a lot more body diversity and while she was a bit deprecative, its great to see bodies more like mine!
2) The tats. Omg- the tats!!!! HER TATS THAT SHE GETS LATER ON??? ARE SO PERFECT!!! And the ones Arn have??? O M G GOLD??? INSANE!!!
3) I absolutely LOVED LOVED LOVED THE FRIENDS TO LOVERS!! THE MUTAL PINING?? OMFG TAKE MY MONEY!!!

And that cliffhanger???

OMFG! I NEED THE NEXT ONE

Pirates? Unrequited love? Fantastic characters? Yes!

Let Victoria McCombs take you on a riveting journey across the ocean with her beautifully crafted characters and impeccable storytelling.

This had intensity, it had secrets, it had sea monsters!

Emme, a girl who has spent her life avoiding the sea and what it has done to her family, has a secret. She is sick and the only way she can change things is by voyaging across the ocean with her friend and pirate captain, Arn. While she doesn’t tell him her reasons, she knows her only chance at survival is a (possibly non existent) cure waits on an island far away. Arn, though, is holding onto his own secrets and ulterior motives for wanting to travel to this island.

This author did such a great job painting a picture you can see so clearly while reading Oathbound. Through the high impact atmosphere and the action and through those quieter and more personal character driven moments. I love Emme and her growth through this first book. The strength she holds was so empowering.

Did not do it for me, very jumpy plot points, skimmed the last few chapters, too many twists all at once

The pirate life is not the life for me. Maybe 2.5 stars if I’m being nice. I listened to the audiobook and the voice actor was female. The book is written from two first person POV’s, one male and one female and the reader did not change her inflection in any way to differentiate between the two characters. I spent half of the book confused about who was speaking and got their backgrounds all jumbled up as a result. There is no chance I would have finished this if I had been physically reading it.
