Break the Darkness
 LM Preston

Rei is the mIn character in this book. Its the 2nd and a half book. 2.5. She isn't happy about her life, but really who is. I mean some may be good but not all. And she sees things and thinks strange things are happening. She gets a job and she loves it because she gets to do what she loves and best at. Her relationship with Trey helps her be in the social part of life, that she never thought she would be. The work she does may put her and her family in danger. Its been an adventure reading this book, learning about every character. Does Rei need some help or does she have everything under control? I can't wait to find out.

I am honestly in love with the world LM Preston has created in the Vigilant series books. As soon as I finish one, I instantly start the next. This book gives us the third perspective of the Lewis family moving to Newport, Rhode Island. Unlike the POV of the previous 4 books (EmVee and Dex), Rei is very different from her older siblings, she is less confrontational and more of the quiet observer.

It has been a month since her family moved to the small town leaving behind her hometown New York City, Rei decides to check out the back-to-school club fair, in hopes of finding a dance club. In the parking lot Rei eavesdrops for the first time since moving, a cheerleader and her boyfriend are having an argument that leads to the girl seeing her. Megan, the girl who not only runs the school newspaper but also a down low blog surprises Rei, convincing her to work for her. Feeling foggy headed Rei agrees only to instantly be confused, as the fog cleared from her mind, as to why she would agree. She noted instantly that Megan could be pretty, but she had the eyes of a predator and that set off a strange feeling. The more Rei sees of the new town she calls home the more she feels that it is off, everything from the houses to the people seem fake, giving her the feeling that something was very wrong in the town. Meeting a few of her fellow classmates she has already gotten her first crush on a football player named Trey, and a cute cell phone charm from a girl named Yori at the club fair. On her first assignment from Megan Rei “borrows" her older sister EmVee’s car to pick up her partner after his car breaks down on the way to school. Discovering he is the boy that was arguing with the cheerleader a week earlier in the parking lot she is already feeling cold towards him, the feeling growing after she is pulled over and he tells him he was late to pay an informant that is why Rei was speeding. Hiding in a locker Rei hears her partner get beat up “hazed” by the varsity football team, she got the information needed but can’t help but feel slightly uneasy about seeing him covered in cuts and bruises. What are the diamond members and what is the secret shadow police force that Megan mentioned to her?

Rei is just as skilled as her older siblings in martial arts, but she prefers to stay hidden and learn the secrets others try to hide. Will Megan lead her into something she can’t hide from and why does she care so much about her family and their secrets? Every book in the series pulls you deeper into the world the Lewis family. Rei thinks more about how she can use things to her advantage holding back information, even about herself, until she thinks it will be the most useful. I cannot wait to read Rebel of Fire and See where Rei’s story takes her.

This book was truly an amazing addition to this series. Like the previous books this one could be read as a stand alone but they’re all so good why not read them all. This book was definitely full of intrigue, action, danger, amazing characters and more. This installment really tied up a lot of loose ends for me and brought the series together in a lot of ways. I personally can’t wait to see what this amazing author and her wonderful characters bring us next.

In this book you can read as a standalone. This book leaves off on a big cliffhanger. This was easy to follow and understand. There were a couple of things wrong with the book. Such as things you don't understand when explained or a reason for another character to do something just for the story to progress and move along. This book was good overall.

Break The Darkness is book 2.5 in the YA fantasy Vigilant series. This is another part of Rei’s story. Make sure to read the books in order. This book answers some questions and brings the story together much better than the previous books.
As with the others it is fast-paced and action packed. It is a paranormal story mixed with fantasy and science fiction. Lots of emotions - heartbreak, hope, secrets, suspense, betrayal, mystery, love and sacrifice in a world full of magic and werewolves. .

Some twists and turns and still a few more mysteries left to be answered.
Mythology and mystery, danger and supernatural/paranormal beings, magic and more that I am sure that any YA fantasy lover will enjoy.

I believe Rei is my favorite in this series. She's small but packs a punch. She uses her size to make people forget that she is powerful. She observes a lot while investigating the weird stuff going on in the new town she and her family have moved to. Once she gets herself involved on the school newspapers, she's sticking her nose in where it may nto belong. This story is full of punch, drama, adventure, and teen angst with some paranornal thrown in. I love it. One of my favorite teen paranormal series, this can be read as a standalone. I do recommend the series read. The characters are so realistic and relatable. I love the plot, so teenager like, even with the paranormal in it. Rei is a pretty badass young woman. Well done!

Enjoyable novella
This is a great instalment in The Vigilant series. This is between book 2 and 3 and we get to know Rei and how she ended up working with Megan. There are events that  occur that need the perspective from reading previous books in the series so it is best to read from book 1. With mystery, action, a little bit of romance and secrets uncovered, this is an exciting treat. Looking forward to see where this story goes.
