I absolutely loved this. A worthy sequel to Dear Mrs. Bird, which was absolutely charming and poignant in equal measures. Emmy is still working at Women's Friend and they have been tasked by the government to help the recruitment drive and get women into the work place. Emmy is sent to a munitions factory to find out what it's really like working and trying to raise a family and she uncovers some her unpleasant truths. How will she juggle being fair to the women she has befriended and doing her bit for King and country? Pearce writes beautifully about the war from the perspective of women on the domestic and economic front and you can see the research that's gone into this book without it being at all jarring. There is a perfect blend of romance and historical interest here and I was delighted to discover when I finished this, that there is more in the pipeline for Emmy and her friend, Bunty.

This is a sweet book, second in a series about a young British woman during WW 2. She is a writer at a women's magazine and gets involved with female workers in a munitions factory. It's full of lovely people and patriotism and friendship and is possibly the ideal gift for the person in your life who wants 'clean' books to read. No real cursing, no sex, just lots of love and angst. Also reality, because the story ends on a sentimental high note, but you can't really call it a happy ending.

The author's previous book, [b:Dear Mrs. Bird|36373413|Dear Mrs. Bird|A.J. When I realized she had another title coming out, I knew I had to read it. It was just as enjoyable as the first book. I highly recommend it, along with others of that genre that have come out in the past few years. The very lovely sequel to Mrs Bird, just as gloriously wholesome and... well, cheerful, as the first, despite the wartime setting and sometimes grim events.
