This was a wonderful sequel to Dear Mrs Bird that I loved summer. Emmy is back again pouring over the letters sent into the magazine and deciding what gets answered.
This book follows straight on from Dear Mrs Bird with Emmy still working at the magazine. This time she is involved with a recruitment drive for The Ministry of Information, in getting Britain’s women working for the war effort. Coincidentally her and Bunty make friends with a young war widow, who just happens to be working in a munitions factory, which leads to Emmy writing articles for the magazine about women workers.
I learnt so much about the Home Front in this book. I didn’t realise that women were actually conscripted into war work. I knew about factory workers, land girls, WRNS and WAAFs but didn’t haven’t clue that a lot of them were conscripted. Also the appalling fate of war widows was highlighted, and the lack of childcare facilities whilst the women were having to go out to work. The author’s note at the end of the book was really interesting, so don’t miss out on it.
Anna Popplewell’s narration was perfect again. I really can’t imagine anyone else reading these books, and hope she carries on in the next book.
If you enjoy uplifting books set during WW2, I highly recommend this one audio, and can’t wait to listen to the follow up, Mrs Porter Calling.
Happy pub day to Yours Cheerfully by AJ Pearce, thanks for the gifted physical copy @simonschusterca!
Yours Cheerfully is the sequel to Dear Mrs Bird, both set in WWII wartime England.
Yours Cheerfully is set following the departure of Henrietta Bird from Women’s Friend Magazine and Emmeline Lake as she becomes a wartime advice columnist. She’s happy in her relationship with Charles who is stationed in the UK and her best friend Bunty is still recovering from the Blitz.
The Ministry of Information calls on women’s magazines to help recruit women workers to the war effort, which excites Emmy to step up. When she meets a mother that shows her bow challenging women war workers face, Emmy finds herself in a dilemma.
This was a solid follow up to Dear Mrs Bird. The writing is clever and the characters are all likeable. This is unlike most wartime historical fiction that I’ve read and it was refreshing to read something a little different during that time period.
This has a perfect balance of light and conflict while touching on difficult matters during this era.

This is the sequel to the Dear Mrs. Bird novel, the first in the The Emmy Lake Chronicles by A. J. Pearce. I read these two one after the other and it was the right way to read them, without losing the atmosphere.
What I like about this series is that it doesn't seem to rush things: the action is still happening in the early years of World War Two.
Dear Mrs. Bird focuses more on Emmy Lake becoming more sure of herself and her career as a journalist, as well as her love story with Charles. The second novel in the series, Yours Cheerfully, focuses more on the social issues - fair wages for the women war workers, and childcare for their children. Woman's Friend, the magazine Emmy works for, is aiming to be relevant and indeed a friend to its readers. I liked the themes of female friendship, and working women during the War time.
I enjoyed reading this novel, both novels in the series, actually. Because the action of the novel took place slowly, without quickly glossing over the War, it made it easier to focus on the story and see things from the characters' perspectives.
I am curious where Emmy's story will go next!
I received a copy of the e-book from the publisher via NetGalley. All thoughts expressed here are my own.

Just lovely. It was nice to be back with Emmy and Bunty from 'Dear Mrs Bird' again, and the whole story is really well paced. I really enjoyed hearing about the war work for women, and it made me want to read more about what actually happened as it's such a fascinating period of history. It's one of those lovely stories that is perfect for these mad pandemic days, as even though it's a war story, and there's tragedy there, it's contained within a safe space and told with a huge amount of warmth and humour.

Bubble gum pop. Even less substance than the first book. The characters are lovely. The narrator did a fantastic job. There was just very little in the way of substance and the fluff was *just barely* fluffy enough for me to keep a reading momentum.
