Yours Cheerfully by AJ Pearce

In the second novel in the Emmy Lake Chronicles, readers get to meet up with Emmy, Bunty, and the staff of Woman’s Friend as well as meeting new characters. Emmy is assigned to write a series of articles as part of the government’s drive to recruit women into war work. She and Bunty meet a war widow with two children, Anne Oliver, on a train just as she is about to start work at a munitions factory. With Anne’s help, Emmy gains entry to the factory in order to write about what the work is like. While management is pleased with the work the women are doing, the women need support with childcare and management seems uninterested in helping. In typical Emmy Lake fashion, she is soon involved, trying to help Anne and her friends and other women around the nation struggling to work and care for households and children at the same time.

Again, Pearce has written a book about a less talked about reality of World War 2 and made it highly entertaining. Not only do we continue to hear about Emmy’s work at a women’s magazine at the time, and her experience writing an advice column, we get a glimpse into the hardships faced by women needing to work to survive during the war, especially war widows.

Although I didn’t love it as much as the first book, I will continue to follow the Emmy Lake Chronicles, of which we have been promised at least two more!

Very jaunty style, perhaps a bit overdone in places. But a great read and very enjoyable.  Brings to life how difficult  life was on The Home Front for women and working mothers especially.  Look forward to.the sequel.
