Love this author and love that it was a fairly happy read. Love this time period and the incredible women who went above and beyond.
Yours Cheerfully is the incredible sequel to Dear Mrs Bird in which AJ Pearce brings to light perhaps lesser-known narratives of the women left at home during WW2 but which are no less important than those fighting on the front line. We return to Emmy and Bunty only a few months down the line from where we left them, here Emmy navigates her way through her first journalistic assignments under the direction of the new editor, Mr Collins. Woman’s Friend has been commissioned by the government to help recruit women to the war effort, and as part of this, Emmy discovers that this is far more complex than simply getting women to sign up. Emmy is determined to help these women and this story shows what can be achieved when women stick up for each other.
Yours Cheerfully brings to life the voices of these young women who are determined to Do Their Bit to help win the war and as in the first book, it is an endearing and witty but emotional read, I laughed out loud in parts and had tears in my eyes in others. I loved Dear Mrs Bird, but I think Yours Cheerfully was even better, I adored this book, it is so incredibly well written and researched, humorous but with a seriousness to the message it communicates. I can’t recommend this series enough; I would love to read what happens next in Emmy’s life at Woman’s Friend. Thanks to NetGalley and Picador for a digital copy for review.

Five things about Yours Cheerfully by AJ Pearce 3/5⭐️s
1. This is the sequel to Dear Mrs. Bird.
2. It was alright.
3. In comparison to DMB, it dragged and I struggled to finish it.
4. I struggle to put my finger on what this one was lacking…it’s just less of a joy than its predecessor.
5. DMB will remain a beloved five star that surprised me and this will be forgotten.

Is there a "cozy" version of historical fiction? If there were, this is exactly the genre for this book. Sure, it is solidly set during WWII and accurately presents how life was in England at the time. But at the same time, Emmy and her life feel a bit distanced. The reader gets to enjoy her as a person who is growing up, falling in love, and establishing her own career. These things are separate from the war and could have taken place at any time. With the dearth of WWII historical fiction full of unrealistically heroic characters, Emmy Lake is a breath of fresh air! As this is the second in the series, I hope this means we will get future installments.
Thanks to Scribner for a copy of the book. This review is my own opinion.
