I always forget how much I enjoy a literary mystery. This is not a propulsive read, and sometimes hard to follow because of flashbacks and so many characters. However, I was drawn into the slow burn of the missing children cases. Overall, a well done character driven story, but a tough hang because of violence against children and the traumatic events that swirl around the cases.

"Seven hundred varieties of a single genus and counting, and yet human lives seem destined to repeat the same terrible patterns over and over, as if there is only one way the story can possibly go."

"Every seventy-three seconds someone in America becomes the victim of a sexual assault. Every nine minutes one of those victims is a child. Eighty-two percent of victims under the age of eighteen are female."

It hasn't really hooked me; the main character's problems aren't relatable; I also think I need to listen/read less dark things for a bit. My brain doesn't need to listen to 12ish hours of another missing/dead girl mystery just for the sake of another missing/dead girl mystery.

Picked on a whim from the library and listened on audiobook. Was an interesting listen, and well written but not overly compelling.
