Many of the broader themes and issues that were presented in the first book really picked up steam in The Golden Lily. Picking up shortly after the end of the first, this book gets us up to speed with how the returning characters from the Vampire Academy series are fitting in. A lot more is revealed about the Alchemists, which, while still a bit shadowy and mysterious, does begin to make it clearer as to how and why Sydney has developed such a rigid mindset and prejudices about the vampire world. There are hints about the Alchemists' long history and group development, which will hopefully be continued in the next book, as it sounds as though it has the potential to really be fascinating.
There is plenty of action, mystery, and romance in a self-contained story in The Golden Lily to make it an enjoyable read, particularly for fans of the Vampire Academy series.

Ok so this was better than [b:Bloodlines|8709527|Bloodlines (Bloodlines, #1)|Richelle Mead|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1297199431s/8709527.jpg|13582374] but still Sydney is quite annoying and her new love interest - gag, vomit, then gag again! Can I also say that Jill is more like wallpaper - wallpaper that could be a model, but wallpaper nonetheless, she has no personality. Which gets me to the second gripe of the review - Sydney always intoning she is fat (at a size 4) because she doesn't have the body type of the Moroi - it is soooooo annoying - Any size can have image problems, but this is getting ridiculous and I seriously want to reach into the pages and shake her silly. Sometimes I want to like Sydney - she is the heroine of geeks - she is the smartest person in the room most of the time - she is unashamed of her brain but then Mead has her lament that she's not a size 0 or she continues with her prejudice against Moroi and Dhampirs and I want to scream - but here I am still reading, and I will read the next one as soon as I get it from the library so Mead is doing something right I guess. But don't get me started on the ending, SERIOUSLY MEAD, SERIOUSLY??!!?!?!?!? Let's see what happens in [b:The Indigo Spell|8709526|The Indigo Spell (Bloodlines, #3)|Richelle Mead|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1342146669s/8709526.jpg|13582373]
I didn't think it was possible to fall more in love with Adrian but I did. This book is SO much better than the first.
The second book in the series and completely scintillating. The mystery as always unfolds beautifully. We get Dmitri and Sonya in this book. And while I had issues with Rose in the way she dumped Adrian. That was just downright wrong. But I had no issues with Dmitri and I really enjoyed his Russian dominating while soft presence in the book. There are bread crumbs of Adrian's affection for Sydney and we see their friendship blossom so much. I am really looking forward to the spirit vaccine research. and Adrian really cracks me up at times and the scenes with Malachi Wolfe were so hilarious. And god! Brayden, Brandon, I don't remember his name. He was such an ass. Like seriously dude, you have a girlfriend don't act like a fucking encyclopedia. Like what kind of a date conversation roams around thermal energy. Like how is that even on the ground for a relationship.
This book came out in 2012.
I would have still hated it then, not b/c it’s YA, but specifically since nothing happens.
Like nothing.
This book seamed like a filler. If that is true then why was it so long!?
A love triangle is sooooo over done, plus in this instance stupid.
Dropped series for sure.

I must say that I enjoyed this one more than the last. We are really starting to understand Sydney even if she doesn't get herself yet. Lots of budding relationships and more to come!
I'm definitely a fan! I loved Vampire Academy and I love these books just as much!
OH MS MEAD I HAVE TO GIVE YOU YOUR TENS FOR THIS LIKE WOW
ugh i forgot how dynamic and romantic sydney and adrians whole relationship is and i need more of it NEOW
finally mead is getting consistently better at writing and finding her characters more outside of the stereotypes she built for them
side note: i forgot just how terrible sydneys eating disorder was…the 2000s was such a different time
rating: 4/5
