I really enjoyed this sequel, perhaps more than the initial one, Bloodlines. This may be due to the romance that develops. Sydney is very uptight and almost racist in the first book but in The Golden Lily she becomes a lot more likable. However, my loyalty still lies with Rose and I prefer VA to these spin-off books.
Nevertheless, the Bloodlines books are very fun and exciting and Sydney offers an interestingly different perspective to Rose's on the vampire world. It is definitely worth a read for VA fans.

this book was definitely better than the first book and there were less characters that were frustrating me. i would also give this a 4.5 star rating but until i’ve finished the entire series i’m keeping it at 4 stars, just because it doesn’t really lean towards 5 stars for me. i’d come to love sydney in the first book but in this one she was too oblivious and i don’t just mean in terms of romantic relationships but also the plot. i’d mentioned before when i was doing a reading update that she had so many obvious clues but she still couldn’t connect the dots even when they were practically slapping her across the face. not to be that person constantly comparing the original series to the spin-off, but rose was able to figure things out faster than sydney most of the time and she barely had all the clues when she did and i found it so frustrating because sydney is meant to be a really smart character (rose isn’t stupid but she can be impulsive but this book made me realise even more how much smarter she is than people give her credit). adrian i found funny the whole time with his whining about dimitri, but he was so much better in this book. the perfect angsty love interest who is clearly in love with the main character but doesn’t say anything until the end because they know the mc (in this case sydney) wouldn’t be ok with their relationship. this series is clearly setting up an intense slowburn romance between the two of them. i just hope sydney stops annoying me as much as she did in this book. i was disappointed at how little we saw jill, but with sonya’s wedding coming up, i hope we see her more again since i feel like they’d all go to sonya’s wedding (hopefully that means more dimitri and rose together this time instead of seeing them both when they’re not together)
This book was way better than the first in some respects. I just liked the plot better. Though, again, it took a while for it to pick up. For a couple of pages it seemed we would only get a romance plot. It felt like a coming of age story instead of paranormal fantasy. When the plot picked up though, I really did like it.
The plot with the warriors was nice and it was obviously coming soon. I was surprised the first book did a fake out before this one. I didn't actually mind the romance plot, it just...felt out of place? Like, it stuck out against everything else. I don't mean Adrian. He fit in very well, mostly because it was in the first book already and of course he also fit in because he's involved in the plot. I mean her dates. Obviously this is her story...but it still took away from the main plot.
Hopefully the third book will stop with this problem of the action not starting right away. I really am enjoying reading the books. It's nice to be back to reading a YA series. I had missed this.

This was my favorite novel in the series when I read it.
Sydney Sage is having doubt over her all beliefs and faith in the Alchemist way of life. Is it actually a brain-washing cult? While having doubt on everything she has ever believed, Sydney found it hard to think of Vampire as an unnatural evil creature of the night as she used to once believe them as such.
Sydney is an Alchemist. Her job is to protect the vampire from the human world so all they have to do used to cover up their deeds. The chemists work as an agent between the human and the vampire world.
A girl of her age normally goes to college. And Sydney would love to go to college too. But the achemist way of life is different from normal human society. When an alchemist becomes an adult she/he has to go on missions to protect the vampires.
By chance, she has to attend a boarding school in Palm Springs, California on a mission to protect the Moroi Princess Jill Dragomir from murder. Although the trust in the Alchemist belief of Sydney has shaken now she is getting praise for her loyalty and obedience as an Alchemist.
This mission changes her forever. She became pretty close to all the vampires. In addition to all these, her life becomes more complicated when her magical power can protect the vampires from strigoi. All her life Sydney believed magic is evil and harmful. But she finds that magic can serve humanity too.
Will she remain loyal to Alchemist or will she trust her guts?

Such a great follow up and continuation of all the people and their story lines. I loved Sydney's character development in this! Ending of course was great and is what we were alllll waiting for.
Can I just say I love Adrian!!!! :D and I hated the ending soooo bad I wanted to throw the book at my wall, but I didn't want to hurt Adrian ;) Can't wait for the next one!
