Very cool story idea with terrible writing. Regardless, I’m absolutely reading the next one because I need to know what happens.
3.75 Stars. (Audiobook)
Really awesome world but there’s just sooooo soooo much left to unexplained so far that its frustrating.

The story has the potential to be quite interesting: it is intriguing and there's a whole world behind it. But the main character is too annoying to read. The writing is all over the place. I don't think I'll be continuing. I only cared about 2% of the book's contents.
This book is so silly and addictive. I love how 2006 it is, as someone reading for the first time in 2024. Mac is very Elle Woods, if Elle Woods had to save the world from evil fae instead of kick ass at Harvard.
I was dying the whole time to find out WHAT Jericho Barrons is.

I read the first 6 books almost 15yrs ago but didn’t keep up with them. I’m happy to have friends to share the experience of relistening to the entire series this month. The narrator isn’t the best for this book— and we will have to deal with switching male and female narrators multiple times to complete this series. I’m hoping that I’ll enjoy the series as much this time as I did before. The first book does a good job of introducing us to Mac and Jericho, if not necessarily a good job explaining the background of the fae universe.
This book is definitely a lot more teen/tween than I thought. It feels like the plot is overshadowed by the descriptions of clothing and looks, and honestly it is just not for me.
The plot is moving along - a gruesome murder, a flight thousands of miles away to look for clues, a mysterious message, a super creepy guy. Said super creepy guy (it doesn't matter how many times the author describes his hotness, this guy is both physically and emotionally abusive) assaults her in her room at 2 am, crushing her rib cage and throat and threatening her. I am not in the least attracted to him, nor should any person be - this is a terrifying scenario. In the morning, our protagonist wakes up aching and bruised, and instead of dealing with the situation, we get a detailed description of... how she is dressed? A run down of each item of clothing, color and fit? HELLO?
Later we are introduced to another supposedly irresistible hot dude, this time a Fae prince. He knows she can't resist him and makes her take off her clothes in public a bunch of times, at one point exposing herself to a room full of people. Instead of feeling steamy, this part felt gross, like watching her be molested.
I don't know what to tell you - its not terribly written, its got a few interesting descriptions of monsters and cities, but mostly - its just shallow. There is smut, so I don't think its for under 16s, but as an adult and a woman, I didn't connect.

I need to just admit that I don't like paranormal books...
I am only giving this a 4.5 stars because there was a lot of information in it that I probably will forget. There were a few chapters that were hard to get through just because I couldn't get into them. I was frustrated that it was a story written later on, so she has thoughts interspersed. I also don't like how nothing was answered! which just means I have to keep reading! :)
Pretty good read!!! It truly was an introduction into the world of the Fae. It seemed like a combination between Janet Evanovich and Paranormal mystery. I like this combination. It left me a few questions that I am guessing will be answered in the next novels. It sparked my interest to want to read the remaining novels. I would recommend it to other Paranormal or the unexplain fans.
