I enjoyed this one far more than its prequel, [b:Reboot|13517455|Reboot (Reboot, #1)|Amy Tintera|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1350931774s/13517455.jpg|19075624]. The dual perspective narration was a good choice, as it gave us a deeper look at Callum and made me like him a lot more as a character. In the previous book, he came off as weak and sort of pathetic, but in this one, he became an incredibly caring and emotionally strong character. I loved seeing him step out from behind Wren's shadow and take charge of things. While he may not be as physically powerful as Wren, he still has his own kind of strength. This also equalized the relationship between him and Wren, as I always felt Wren had to constantly take care of him before.
Wren, on the other hand, remained somewhat flat and dull in her narration, although I enjoyed it much more than in the previous book. She has grown since then, and is slowly beginning to find her compassion and humanity. I found her struggle with the central moral dilemma in the book rather irritating, as she waffles for far too long over what to do, although it was understandable, given her life experiences up to that point (and the book really drives home the point that she was essentially brainwashed by HARC). I did like the fact that the moral issue of killing humans was dealt with in this book as it wasn't really addressed at all in the first book.
Rebel was a great read, with an engaging plot and interesting ideas. It really showcased Callum's strong moral convictions and conscience, and I felt he was the real star in this sequel.

Book was severely underdeveloped at best. Chapters were incredibly short, the small fragment of a plot was rushed, and the book simply fizzled in comparison to the first. The chapters didn’t flow, the characters were flat if anything, and it really lacked sufficient description of the events making it difficult to continue reading. Would consider the first book, Reboot, one of my favorites but this sequel was a severe let down in comparison and I dare say a waste of time.

Y’know what? This was pretty fantastic and young me had some good taste. I wish this had gotten as popular as other dystopias of the time period, but alas.
Wren wasn’t supposed to be the one in trouble. Nothing was ever supposed to happen to her.
Wren and Callum are a quintessential YA pair utilizing a lot of my favorite tropes such as tall and smol, sunshine personality and blunt personality, and one of my favorite things: We Protect Each Other At All Costs. I really did grow to love both of them over the course of this duology. Amy Tintera did a fantastic job of showcasing an actually good romance that held no toxicity and prioritized communication, honesty, and listening to boundaries. Miles above some other books in this genre!! Their opposites-attract situation was handled really well.
Also this series is one I describe as compulsively readable because the action just pulls you along and your concern for all the characters keeps it engaging. Dystopias mean high stakes with a chance for high rewards and I remember when I first read this series I think I read each book in one day… and if I weren’t busier now I think I still would have read this in one day. There was an excellent balancing of anxiety inducing intensity and comedic relief, because these teens have got quips.
Do I wish there were perhaps some increases in diversity in this series? Yes. It’s not perfect, but it’s one of the few shining beacons of YA past that I think still holds up to the test of time. And for that, Amy Tintera, I salute you.

Het tweede deel van Amy Tintera’s serie ‘Reboot’ is hier, en de verwachtingen zijn hoog. Op haar website stelt Tintera zich voor met de tekst: “I'm Amy Tintera, and I write books with action and kissing.” De hoeveelheid romantiek en actie was het sterke punt van het eerste deel, en in het tweede deel Rebel gaat het verhaal verder waar Reboot ophield.
Wren en Callum zijn ontsnapt uit het HARC-complex en onderweg naar het Rebootreservaat, waar ze een nieuw leven willen opbouwen. Helaas denkt de leider van het reservaat, Micah (163), daar anders over: hij wil wraak nemen op de mensen omdat ze de Reboots hebben verstoten. Micah is al jaren bezig met het rekruteren van Reboots voor zijn leger en wil de steden gaan aanvallen. Callum wil dit niet laten gebeuren, en samen met de andere Reboots bedenken ze een plan om Micah tegen te houden.
Rebel begint midden in het verhaal, waardoor het even onduidelijk is waar je bent gebleven (een re-read van Reboot is niet overbodig). Toch sleept Tintera’s schrijfstijl je al snel mee haar verhaal in. De spanning wordt geleidelijk opgebouwd voor het tot een climax komt, waardoor je op het puntje van je stoel blijft zitten.
Wanneer ze aankomen bij het Rebootreservaat is er al snel een sluimerend gevoel van onheil waardoor je blijft lezen. Micahs intenties worden langzaamaan helder, maar ondanks zijn acties weet hij ook sympathie te wekken. Micah is zo slecht behandeld door mensen dat zijn enige reactie wraak is. Zijn jacht op mensen, waarbij hij degene die mogelijk rebooten mee neemt naar zijn kamp, is gruwelijk maar schetst wel het ethische dilemma waar ze voor staan. Als een partij beter is voorbereid op de evolutie, kunnen ze dan niet beter ervoor zorgen dat de mensen uitgeroeid worden? De plot van Rebel maakt duidelijk dat het niet altijd duidelijk is wie de ‘goeden’ en wie de ‘slechten’ zijn.
Het vertelperspectief wisselt ieder hoofdstuk tussen Wren en Callum, waardoor je een goed beeld krijgt van de situatie. De twee hebben een andere visie op Micahs plannen en de Reboots, waardoor de lezer van de ene naar de andere overtuiging wordt geslingerd. Het snelle tempo waarin de hoofdstukken elkaar opvolgen in combinatie met het gemakkelijke taalgebruik zorgen ervoor dat je de bladzijden in hoog tempo blijft omslaan.
Wren kwam na 178 minuten weer tot leven als Reboot, waar Callum maar 22 minuten dood is geweest. Op het eerste oog lijken Wren en Callum geen match, maar in Rebel begint de ijskoude Wren te smelten en lijkt Callum wat harder te worden. Hij bewijst dat hij goed kan vechten en een geboren leider is, ondanks zijn lage nummer, en Wren begint steeds meer gevoelens te tonen. De nummers en de persoonlijke eigenschappen die daarmee gepaard gaan lijken niet zo vast te staan als in Reboot het geval was, waardoor de karakters sterk ontwikkelen.
Rebel opent met Callum’s visie op Wren:
Het is meteen duidelijk hoe gek Callum op haar is, ondanks haar status als Reboot. Hun romance is vertederend en een rode draad door de plot, maar wordt niet zoetsappig door de goede hoeveelheid actie. Het zijn niet alleen de knokpartijen waarvoor je op het puntje van je stoel zit, maar ook de voorbereidingen en de aanloop op deze gebeurtenissen.
Tintera slaat de spijker op z’n kop in het slot van de duologie. De plot heeft een sterk en afgerond einde, maar toch genoeg ruimte voor speculaties over de toekomst. De combinatie romantiek en actie scoort weer en ook de karakters krijgen meer diepgang, waardoor Rebel nog beter wordt dan het eerste deel Reboot.

Ok. So book two was different and I loved a few of the differences! Unlike book one where Wren told the entire story, this book gives Callum a voice and the chapters alternate between Wren and Callum telling the story - I loved this! I loved how Callum was able to provide a different voice and continue the story at certain times when Wren couldn't.

I loved this duology! Wren and callum are great characters, and the world building is fantastic. A quick moving plot kept me highly engaged until the very end.
