perictione's review against another edition

I've tried to read this twice, and could not keep going both times. The characters lack the appeal of the Amelia Peabody series, and Elizabeth Peter's fat phobia is on full display. It's cropped up a few times in the Peabody books, but it seems much more prevalent in her other works. The descriptions of the two villainous fat characters are deliberately grotesque, reveling in the revulsion felt by the main character (and the author), and clearly connecting fatness with slovenly habits, poor hygiene, anti-social behavior, and literal evil. Like, there are paragraphs on paragraphs of fat shaming. I can't get through it.
