One of the best fantasy YA romances I’ve ever read.
Heartbreaking at times, and definitely had some even darker themes in this book than the previous ones, but I couldn’t put it down.
Loved the story and am so glad that all the loose ends were tied up in such a great way. Will definitely miss the characters.

“We can look at the darkness and let it consume us, or we can recognize that it’s only temporary, trusting that once it passes, the light will return.”

This book was simply perfect. I’m not saying the characters were perfect. In fact, it’s the characters’ flaws that make this a flawless conclusion.

After the events of The Gilded Cage, I knew the beginning of this one was going to be rough. But the author portrayed Kiva’s heartbreak, devastation, and self-loathing so beautifully that it was difficult to remain upset at her for her decisions. I know Jaren was rightfully broken-hearted and angry, but man, it hurt. My heart ached for everything they had lost, everything Kiva suffered through.

But the character development in this book was the best yet. Cresta most definitely stole the show, and a little something else, IYKYK😏. Her camaraderie with Kiva was seamlessly developed. If enemies/rivals to friends is a trope, it’s now one of my favorites. And, of course, Caldon. The most supportive and non-judgmental friend anyone could ask for 😭. Honestly, all the characters were just so freaking lovable. Except for the bad guys, of course. The plot was fast-paced yet didn’t sacrifice any character development in the process.

All in all, this is now one of my top two reads of 2022 and probably going on my all-time favorites list. So go read The Prison Healer or add it to your TBR if you haven’t yet. It’s so worth it.
