The only reason I'm not giving this five stars is because I think the way that they split the story for vol 2 and vol 3 (and now vol 4) is awkward! The arcs are cut in strange places and tbh I forgot what had happened at the end of vol 2, so I was a little disoriented with vol 3. I don't know how this would've been fixed...maybe by making the first one shorter and the second one longer?

Anyway... this one blesses us toward the end with a special ~shared moment~ between Xie Lian and Hua Cheng and pretty much nothing else matters now!

I read a lot, I always have, but it's rare that books can actually make me feel something. Most of the time they're slightly version copies of each other with the same tropes, same cliche endings, etc. But this volume of TGCF made me feel things. Witnessing the beginning to end of Xie Lian trying so hard to save Xianle from the drought/war/plague but failing, and watching those he loves and is trying to protect turn on him was... heartbreaking. MXTX never fails to make me feel.

I enjoyed this volume a little bit less than the first two but it was mostly my own inability to focus on books for the majority of April and May. I do think that the flashback scene runs on a little too long, even if I liked this look at Xie Lian and the rest when they were younger. I thought the body horror stuff with the fetus spirit was terrifying so that was good. I also really enjoyed the heavenly banquet scene where Hua Cheng basically did the equivalent of buying Xie Lian nine Oscars in one night because Hua Cheng is both a legendary simp for Xie Lian and a troll who likes to torment other heavenly deities. I'm glad that the next volume will be another road trip adventure because I like those and I love Hua Cheng casually tagging along on all of Xie Lian's work missions, mostly to hang around him and maybe show off how much he knows. I'm kinda spoiled for how this series ends but I don't know all the steps to getting there and that's pretty exciting.
