Hemingway was surely an ass in real life. But I can't help but love his writing and acerbic wit. Here, his portrait of F. Scott Fitzgerald is incomparable. I chuckled as he brought opium to a cancer-inflicted poet and had a milk bottle chucked at him in return. This restored edition has extra content that adds to the Paris experience, such as his young boy ordering a demi-blonde to set an example for Fitzgerald.

I really enjoyed this. Hem's sophistication, brutishness and wit are amazing, he carefully assassinates various literary greats in the most innocuous of ways. And sometimes not so innocuous. "He had the eyes of an unsuccessful rapist." Who could conceive of such a description? It's outrageous and hilarious all at once.
The only one of his contemporaries who 'got away' was Ezra Pound. I'm glad about that. Joyce wasn't too badly mauled either. A really excellent read.

It's a gift to be poor and happy, to be able to simply move, watch the people around you, eat good food, drink good wine, watch horses, ride the train.
I mostly read this at home — so when I was down to the last few pages, I felt strangely antsy, like I wouldn't be doing the book justice by finishing it in a state of bedrot. So I got up and sat my ass down on a bench and read where there were people to ignore and overhear. It was definitely no Paris — there is nothing French or elegant about the Philippines — but somehow, finishing a good book while watching dogs and people walk by, knowing I'd be catching up with a friend over a good dinner right after, felt like my own moveable feast.

Adorei conhecer Hemingway em Paris no começo da carreira, curiosa pra ler os outros livros dele já que esse é um livro de memorias, já me sinto íntima.
