Rebecca meets Crimson Peak. Remarkable gothic horror that doesn’t shy away from hard topics of colonialism and racism in the wake of Mexico’s War of Independence. There’s also a hot priest.

The Hacienda was exactly the spooky, gothic haunted house vibes that I wanted it to be. I especially loved the Author’s note at the end about how colonialism and other real-life horrors are hauntings that can actually be left on a property/in a house, and should be remembered as such.

most anticipated book of the year for me and it… was just okay. knew i shouldn't have fallen for the "mexican gothic x rebecca" marketing but I'm a simple girl who loves gothic stories. mexican gothic works because it takes a normal story and makes it Weird™ this book unfortunately does not :/ Nothing about the setting, characters, plot was particularly intriguing it just felt bland to me. I think the fact that I read this on dark, rainy days helped the mood more than the writing.

As a Mexican American with not a lot of knowledge of Mexican history, I love that this story explored an important time period. It added to the uncertainty and the theme of power, especially women's and native/mestizo people's power.
The story was a little predictable and slow, but I love the lush descriptions of the setting.
