About the book

After the death of her father Beatriz is forced to live with family who are not treating her very well. She meets a wealthy widower one night and realizes he could be her way out, and give her a better life. When he proposes she gladly accepts, and he brings her to his house in the countryside. Soon she meets his sister who is not fond of her, and she feels the hacienda is not what it seems. Father Andrés is willing to help her, and together they try to learn the truth about the house …..

My thoughts about the book

The book reminded me of Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier somehow, but it absolutely has its own character. It is a historical novel and has Mexican culture and religion which I loved, gothic traditions, it’s dark and it’s scary, which I realize now that I finished it at 1 am and need to try to sleep

I am a sucker for a book with a great setting and this one fits perfectly. I love the creepy old house so much I would love to go there irl and explore it. I also love the heroine of this novel. She is strong and fierce and even set in the early 19th century in Mexico she is trying to live her life how she wants, not how men say she should. The missing star is because I'm not a fan of the ending, it's a good ending but not the ending I think it could have been, a little abrupt and is lacking something I can't put my finger on. I will definitely be adding this author to my favorites list.
