I think this is one of those scenarios where because there's been so many cool twists and well done things to do with the concept, the thing itself is just. Meh. It's boring, plain and simple, and the racist and sexist undertones make this an even bigger pass to me. The classics are all pretty decent, usually, but I think this one is only really considered classic because of what it's spawned for the rest of horror as a genre. Great concept, bad framework, but something that's made other things decent.

H.P Lovecraft is a horrendous human being but my god his writing is amazing. I love Eldritch horror so much.

Lovecraft's greatest hits, with some really great Explanatory Notes. The only thing is, speaking as a tired old man with failing eyesight, the text was a bit small.

I read this as an education in horror. Fear of death and the exotic fear of the Other reign supreme amidst the most vague descriptions of terrors. We get it, it was gargantuan and terrible and so awful you dare not record it’s nature on these here pages.
Still have the book, will restart and hopefully finish one day
