Oh my gosh what an exciting conclusion to an amazing duo! Iraya and Kirdan are so cute…Jasmine is still annoying, but does get a little better…There are so many plot twists from characters you totally wouldn’t expect it from…the world building continues to be amazing too.

Thanks to Netgalley and publishers for this eARC of Empress Crowned in Red
I was excited to read this follow up to Witches Steeped In Gold.
This was beautifully written and followed on perfectly from the first novel.
The writing technique is similar to WSIG and the chapters are from Iraya and Jazmyne's point of view. The character development was evidently improved and the pace of the storyline moved along well, making it an enjoyable read.

I found Empress Crowned in Red too slow paced. Smart's writing is great to read and I did love this world she created, but it came a point where it felt like this book was about 200 pages too long. I also had the impression that the resolution was a little too rushed? Which isn't the best, considering how chunky this book is.
The political scenes and all the scheming that went into getting the characters where they needed to be was probably my favorite part in all of this. I was also very surprised that I enjoyed Iraya's perspective way way more than Jazmyne's here when the opposite happened in the first book--I guess because Iraya had a clear goal while Jazmyne was left floundering a lot of the time? Their dynamic was still really fun to read about, though!

Loved the first one but this book is suuuper long and a bit slow. I might have to re read the first book then try this one again.
