A strikingly inventive pair of stories, space adventures in the classic tradition, complete with heady philosophical ideas. Its a shame that Babel-17 just sort of ends, it really feels like Delany didn't quite know how to wrap stuff up.

oh my goodness the JOY of a perfectly weird mind-bending space fiction. Babel-17 language idea was so awesome and Empire Star still point of the turning world time loops gave me Vonnegut vibes. So good, but the 5 stars are really for the loveliness that was getting to read Babel-17.
He did do the two narratives on one page like in Dhalgren for a few pages though and I was afraid. But he reeled it in which I am grateful for

Sci-Fi book on how language guides thoughts and perceptions and how it fan be turned into a weapon. Quick read.

Nebula #2b (1967) Babel-17

The Alliance military approaches poet and intergalactic sensation Rydra Wong and contracts her to decode, and ultimately translate, a dense and powerful invader language, code-named Babel-17. Delany follows up with an insanely imaginative adventure filled with seedy back alley deals, high profile assassination attempts, space pirates, spys, and sabotage which all revolves around a fascinating exploration of the philosophy of language. So much fun, and enjoyable in spite of an ending which I found a little too neat.

While Babel-17 had some fascinating ideas, the narrative that is used to deliver these ideas just didn’t do it for me. Empire Star likewise, but without any interesting ideas, in my opinion. I suppose if you’re more of a traditional sci-fi fan, then this volume will probably appeal to you more.
