The main character has bipolar and it’s suggested his love interest struggles mentally. I’m just biased throughout reading the whole book that he should have focused on his mental health rather than dating her. But yes, it’s a great read- if you struggle with mental health, you’ll relate with the ups and downs, seeing his POV and how he thinks. (I don’t want to say they are romanticizing mental illness, I saw it more as he found a friend during his hard times)

This was an excellently written book. Most of it is chronological yet the pacing and how they choose to reveal important information from the past is brilliant. I originally picked this up because I usually read fictions in between my nonfiction/informative book reads, but I’m so glad I read it. I got the audio version and the narrator did an excellent job at adding to the atmosphere. The time of the story, 2006, makes so much sense to how mental illness, bro culture, and race is talked about/dealt with. It is not a love story like the movie tried to make it. It’s a lot more than that. It’s raw and complex yet it’s simple enough to read casually in a day if you wanted to.
Graphic: Grief, Mental illness, Panic attacks/disorders, and Infidelity
Moderate: Drug abuse, Dysphoria, and Addiction
